One way Jesus(Hillsong United — Cover) Waldemar Eziner
Ever attended a conference, meeting, bible study or church service where you’ve been very encouraged. So much so, that even before you leave the event, you are writing down the next steps for your commitment to make a change. You leave thinking, that’s exactly what I needed. You even take a few steps towards the change you are so excited to make. But, as the days go by, you are busy and not quite as focused. Before you know it, a week has gone by and you realize you’ve barely thought about your plan to make changes. You set aside some time and re-examine your plan. You determine to get back on track the following week. Next week comes and everyday you hold yourself accountable. At the weeks end, you think this is going good. The following week, you only miss one day of revisiting your plan and keeping your commitment. I’ve got this, you think.
About 6 months later you are cleaning out some papers and, to your surprise, what do you find? It’s your notes from that day you found new hope. You remember your excitement, but it quickly drains away as reality hits you. Yet again, another plan for change fell by the wayside. Your wondering, How did I let this happen again! You look over the last 6 months. The hole you want so badly to get out of, has only gotten deeper. Where to go from here?
We’ve all had times like the description above. Some of us, many more than others. So, what do you do? You can’t just tell yourself to get serious. You were serious all the other times. You can’t just tell yourself to get an accountability partner. You’ve tried that too and just quit calling when you start falling behind. What is the magic that you need? Good question! It’s not a magic formula that you can find to keep yourself committed to change. But, there is power that you may have not considered. Jesus. He is the key to success. He’s not magic and He won’t do it for you, but He will be faithful and be with you every step of the way. Having said this, you do have your part to follow through on. You must demonstrate real willingness on your part. Does He expect that you will never fail? Not at all.
I want to share some commentary from the Leadership Bible:
Those who don’t learn from history are destined to repeat it. This really hit home for me. I took a stand to not relive the life of some of the people I have loved the most who came before me. I would have liked to take that stand earlier in my life. My children, have made the same stand and are making a difference in their families and for my grandchildren. I am very thankful!
God gives us greater amounts of illumination as we respond to the light we’ve already received. Here’s your part! Why would God continue to reveal more of who He is, of who He created you to be, of His plan for your life, of His eternal Kingdom to come if you aren’t able to demonstrate your capacity to receive more?
Revelation always demands a response. Give this LOTS of thought. This ties directly with the previous point. When God reveals something to you, let’s say, a resentment that you are harboring in your heart. You are now aware and it’s quite possible you really didn’t realize this before; now what? You can choose to do nothing or you can choose to be thankful for the revelation, ask God’s forgiveness and seek God’s help to correct this. No longer then does this have a hold on you – yea! Be aware that doing nothing is a response in and of itself.
What can you do to stick to your commitment and plan for change?
1. First and foremost, discuss your plan with a trusted person who demonstrates a solid walk with God in their life. This person will be honest with you. This is exactly what you need.
2. Ask people to pray for you. To pray that you will recognize the Lord’s hand upon you and that He will place the people in your path to help you. That you will be strengthen in awareness and your commitment. That you will grow in a deep relationship with Him.
3. Accountability is a must. Joining a support group, using a coach, something that will not let you off the hook so easy if you begin to back track.
4. Journal. In your busy days, it can be to easy to overlook your victories. Seeing the victories are important; no matter how small they may be. Victories are your lifeline of hope.
5. Celebrate along the way. When you’ve kept to your plan of change for a month, or whatever is appropriate, discuss it with a friend/your support group/your coach. Give yourself credit and do not belittle your progress.
6. Recognize that change is a process. It’s not a switch within you that you can flip. It is a life journey.
As you utilize some or all of the suggestions above, you will hopefully see how the process is working. How Jesus has supported you and how He has illuminated your path along the way; giving you what you need when you needed it.
