Why is Great Britain no longer a Christian Nation?
Atheism or minority religions seem to be on the rise in Britain,over a hundred years they sent Christian missionaries all over the world sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.They gave the Christian world mighty preachers/theologians like Knox, Wesley,and Spurgeon, produced the King James 1611 Bible which changed millions of peoples lives , they sparked many Christian revivals,Now nothing ! why?
Perhaps I should have asked, why is christianity declining in the U.K? Reading your answers confirms that to me !!
Contrary to all those that have answered before me, The UK is still very much a Christian nation. Yes, atheism is on the rise, as is to be expected in a country with a free press and moderately high level of education, but that does not change the structure of the country itself.
The CoE still has very strong ties to the state and there is no secularity of any sort. The monarch is both the head of state and head of the church. They are the same person!!! How can that be deemed to be secular?
The house of Lords still has a disproportionately high number of clergy in its ranks, and whenever science finds something new and wondrous to announce, the first people to be trollied out are the theists who have no other agenda than to dismiss years of research because it clashes with their own particular flavour of firebrandism.
That and the still predominant use of non secular terminology (bless you! put your heart into something etc.) further underlines just how far the UK still has to come to even reach secularity. Division of church and state depends on either our monarch relinquishing either head of state or head of the church status, or the UK becoming a republic
We have a long way to go.
